Central Valley

Central Valley1

The Central Valley is Costa Rica’s most important region. Right in the center of the country, the Central Valley is home to the capital, San José. It is where 70% of the country’s population live and work, and is its transportation, financial, commercial and industrial hub. It has the country’s largest international airport, and another airport for smaller planes and private aircraft. In addition, the Central Valley has Costa Rica’s best year-round climate: never too hot, never too wet.

La Garita de Alajuela, just east of the capital, has been singled out by National Geographic magazine as one of the three best places in the world to live based on its temperate, tropical climate. It is popular with those intending to buy property and settle in Costa Rica.
Greater San José features the fascinating Jade and Gold museums, central pedestrian boulevard, theatres, bustling Chinatown and recent downtown core revival.

Its western suburbs of Escazú, Santa Ana, Ciudad Colón and Belén now offer the country’s best shopping, schools, universities, fine dining, banking and medical facilities, both public and private. Most expats, especially Americans, Canadians and Europeans who prefer urban living and have bought property in Costa Rica, are concentrated in these areas which boast some of Costa Rica’s most high-demand and secure residential communities, with a vast array of both homes for sale and attractive rental properties, from mid-range to upscale.
The cool hills of Heredia just north of San José, Atenas and Grecia are among other in-demand residential areas in the Central Valley, with many new homes for sale that people looking at buying property in Costa Rica can discover. There is also lots to see and do within easy distance. The Poás Volcano and nearby La Paz Waterfall Gardens just north of Alajuela are musts for a day’s excursion; ditto for the lovely Orosi Valley and its coffee fields just east of Cartago. There is a myriad of attractive small towns and villages, each with its own local character and charm, within easy reach in every direction just outside of San José. For those contemplating permanent residence, part-time living or retirement here, and are looking at homes for sale in Costa Rica, the Central Valley’s convenience and comfortable living is an attractive real estate option.
