As the baby boomers reach retirement, many have looked at Costa Rica as the ideal spot where they can spend the rest of their lives living near the greens. Costa Rica is no stranger to golf. The first two courses were built in the 1970s. Now there are more than 10 times that number, some within attractive gated communities that provide single home and condo living, 24/7 security, and recreational facilities such as swimming pools, tennis courts and clubhouses.
Costa Rica is well known for its internationally acclaimed golf courses and country clubs. The Central Valley boasts several fine golf courses such as the 18-hole Cariari Country Club, ten minutes from the center of San José. Parque Valle del Sol is another 18-hole golf course/residential complex in Santa Ana, a rapidly growing and popular San José suburb which is home to many North Americans and Europeans alike. The Central Pacific, only two hours away, will have Costa Rica’s newest golf resort: Cabo Caletas Ocean Golf Course, located 20 minutes south of Jacó beach, scheduled to open in 2013. And just north of Jacó is La Iguana, the 18-hole, par 72 course at the upscale Marriott Los Sueños Golf Course and Marina.
The National Golf Association of Costa Rica was founded on 1971 to promote and maintain the integrity of the game. Now the country’s official governing organization, its mission as an association is to improve services and offer new innovations to its associates, and to help improve the game of golf in the region overall.
