Wherever there is a golf course in Costa Rica, there is a community of avid golfers living close by! San José boasts two of the country’s most popular 18-hole courses: the long-established course at the Cariari Country Club on the way to the airport, and the newer Valle del Sol club in the south-east suburb of Santa Ana.
Both clubs are public; Valle del Sol is a special favorite of the large ex-pat community, especially Americans and Canadians, scattered throughout the San José and surrounding areas. Within 10 minutes of each are attractive residential areas, both very upscale and more moderate. Real Cariari, for instance, right beside the golf club of the same name, is an established residential community where desirable homes always come on the market.
An even more vibrant real estate market is to be found right around Valle del Sol, as the area is still being developed with new private homes and condominiums, some at extremely reasonable prices. The Valle del Sol area, its homes and condominiums are a magnet for both golf enthusiasts and newcomers to Costa Rica as well, since it is just minutes from modern supermarkets, fine dining, upscale boutiques, banks, business centers housing the Costa Rican and Central American headquarters of the Fortune 500, strip malls and expat hang-outs.
There are two nine-hole courses in the San José area: the very posh Costa Rica Country Club in Escazú – restricted to members only and their guests – and Los Reyes Country Club in Alajuela, which accepts visitors and has reasonable rates. Both courses are located in very upscale communities, especially the former, with its wonderful homes, condominiums and apartments. Los Reyes is part of an overall gated community; newly built homes and building lots are available.
Once out of San José, you will find the closest golf course at Los Sueños, 90 minutes away, just north of the very popular beach resort of Jacó. The 18-hole La Iguana course is open to the public. Los Sueños is one of Costa Rica’s most outstanding developments; attractive condos now sell for more than $500,000; private homes at well over a million. Los Sueños also boasts Costa Rica’s finest marina, and both within Los Sueños itself and in nearby Jacó you can find fine dining, specialty stores, and tourist activities and adventures.
Other golf courses amid vibrant golf communities and attractive homes for sale are to be found in Tambor across the Gulf of Nicoya, near Tamarindo (Hacienda Pinilla Golf) and Playa Conchal (Reserva Conchal Golf) in Guanacaste, Punta Islita Golf Course, Tango Mar Beach & Golf Resort and Four Seasons Papagayo.
